Walk this way

Knowing God personally is the most exciting adventure as we grow and change to become more like Jesus. A decision to follow Jesus is the most significant step, but it is just the first step in your new life as a Christian. Jesus has not just set us from our old life, he has new things to teach and show us so that we can learn to trust and to serve him.

Helping you go forward

Here are six things you can start doing right now to start to grow as a follower of Jesus:

1. Pray

Prayer is simply communication with God and as in any other relationship, communication is a must. Prayer is our very life-breath as humans. If life is not shared with someone it is dead: ‘This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God.’ (John 17:3) You don’t need fancy or ‘religious’ words to talk to God, just share with him as you would a friend. God cares for you. Are you thankful? Worried about anything? Do you need God’s help? Tell God! You can share anything but it may be helpful to have a simple model to get you started.

Try this A.C.T.S. model :

  • Adoration: Give God praise and honour for who he is as Lord over all.

  • Confession: Honestly deal with the sin in your prayer life.

  • Thanksgiving: verbalise what you’re grateful for in your life and in the world around you.

  • Supplication: Pray for the needs of others and yourself.

2. Read the Bible

There are loads of great reasons to read the Bible; to learn more about God’s character, to find guidance, to renew our minds, to keep us close to God and much more.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man (or woman) of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16–17

Try to spend at least 10 minutes a day reading God’s word. If you don’t have a physical copy of the Bible, why not download a free Bible App for your phone or tablet? Try the ‘Read Scripture App’. In it, you can set up a daily reading plan to guide you through the Bible in a year. Check out this short film then download the app.

Alongside this you will also want to also have a Bible or Bible App to turn to for everyday reading. There are lots of different translations of the Bible, I would encourage you to use a modern translation which is easy to read and understand. The NASB or NKJV are a good balance of readability and faithful translation of the original manuscripts, for this ‘Tecarta’ is a good option.

3. Join a local church

God doesn’t intend for you to live as an isolated Christian, he wants you to be part of a family of local followers of Jesus. Look out for a church which teaches from the Bible, where Jesus is worshipped, where the work and gifts of the Holy Spirit are welcomed. Look for a church which is seeking to use its resources and time to serve the needy, to help people become committed followers of Jesus and one which is active in sharing the good news with others. No church is perfect, only God is but the church should be serving the purposes of God and reaching out with the love of Jesus.

You can learn more about the church and what it is here for by listening to this series recorded at Ichthus Christian Fellowship:

The Church: Where heaven and earth meet

4. Be Baptised

Those who believe in and follow Jesus should prepare to be baptised. Jesus said:

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28

You can watch the short film below which helps us to understand what Baptism is and why it is significant.  You should be given further guidance and assistance with believers baptism at a local church.

5. Start Learning

Now you are a follower of Jesus, it’s important that you start learning more about God. Just as Jesus had twelve disciples, so today Jesus has millions all over the world. A disciple simply means a learner, like an apprentice. Now you are apprenticed to Jesus you can be sure he wants to teach you. Your most important source of learning and discovery is the Bible where we can find truth and revelation to help us grow and guard us against false ideas about who God is.

However, we need to make an important distinction between the Bible which is inspired by God and God himself. Our priority is to know the God of the Bible, the author himself not just verses. It’s quite possible to know about God but not know him. Jesus warned the religious folks of his day about this saying:

“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”

John 5:38-39

To help us approach the Bible in the right way we should do so looking for what the God of the Bible wants to show us. To help us in this God has given us His Holy Spirit. Jesus said:

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”

John 16:13

So we can ask the Holy Spirit to guide us as we read the Bible.

Here are four simple questions we can ask as we approach a passage of the Bible:

  • What do we learn about God?
  • What do we learn about people?
  • What does God want to teach me?
  • How can I be obedient to God / what should I do?

To learn more about some of the basics of Christianity, you may want to join a local Alpha Course.

To help you understand and unpack more of the meaning of each book the Bible, we would like to recommend the online teaching of Roger Forster here.

When you have found a good local church, make it your intention to learn from mature Christians and from the sermons and always ask questions!

6. Serve Jesus

Now you are a Christian, it’s time to start making the most of the rest of your life. You’re no longer living like everyone else around you, you’re living for Jesus and his mission.

A great way to start serving Jesus is to start to tell others about him. Why not start by writing down the names of four or five friends or family members and committing to pray for them to come to Jesus then share why you have come to believe in Jesus and tell them what he has done for you. Why not send them a link to this website?

There are lots of ways that God can use us to help others and tell others about Jesus. We are called to shine for God and share the good news of Jesus so everyone can know and have the opportunity to respond.

Do you want to serve Jesus?

You can start by telling God you are willing and asking him to show you ways you can tell others and serve others in Jesus’ name. It starts with what we already have and with those around us.
